Creating and running a Minecraft server is not as easy as it sounds, as there are a lot of things you need to consider when creating one and setting one up.
Step one: Deciding what service you want to use/ running it of your computer
If you want my opinion, I would recommend using a server hosting website due to the fact that it can be very hard to keep a server online and run it 24/7 on a personal computer. The cost will most likely be about the same due to the increased electric bill, although you might not notice if your parents are paying it.
Services I recommend are really any service with good reviews. For me personally, I use a service called Pebblehost and I have had no problems with it. It is a good price and it has a good support team but really there are a lot of services that are good in price and other details. I run my server on 10 gigs of ram on Pebblehosts premium plan and it is only $22.50 a month but you could easily run a server on their basic plan with 10gigs of ram or less, and with 10 gigs it is $10 a month and with each less gig of ram the price goes down by a dollar per month.
Setting up your server
The first step that I recommend is to make a dedicated Discord server to go with your Minecraft server as Minecraft does not by default have a voice chat feature so I recommend you jointly use Discord. It is not too hard to set up because Discord is fairly user friendly. As of settings, go into your config file and make sure to put your spawn protection to 0, as it makes certain things not work with it enabled. Also make sure to allow flying, it sounds bad but with it disabled it will constantly kick players off of your server just for getting on and off of a horse, and that can be a bit annoying. I also recommend enabling whitelisting, a topic we will cover again later. The last thing to enable is a death counter command. It is a feature in vanilla Minecraft and it allows you and everyone else to see how many times a player has died. It can be enabled easily by running these below commands through your server console page (some services have console commands different from vanilla commands so I recommend not doing it through console) or by joining into your server and making yourself an operator and pasting the commands in chat. If you are running a server in 1.17 or above, you can use the other command to allow a certain percentage of players to sleep.
1st command: /scoreboard objectives add Deaths Deathcount
2nd command: /scoreboard objectives setdisplay list Deaths
Sleeping Percentage command: /gamerule playersSleepingPercentage 0
(Only put 0 if you only want 1 person to be needed to sleep, otherwise you can put any number like 50 for half required to sleep etc.)
Getting players
One of the hardest steps, (unless you already have a group of friends to play with) is actually getting more players. There are some websites or discord servers that you can advertise a Minecraft server in, but I have no clue where to find them. Minecraft used to have a way on their official Discord server to advertise your own, but sadly they removed that a while ago. So, for me the best way is to find players on other servers that maybe are bored of them or want to quit and invite them to your server. (if you have a hard time finding players then I’ll go ahead and help you, this is the link to my server if you don’t want to go through the trouble of setting your own up :D).
Struggles of starting your server
Unfortunately even if you try hard you will always get those awful people, the type that like to hack and cheat and overall just be a bit of a nuisance. There are some types of anti cheats you can install, but they take a lot of CPU usage so I don’t recommend them. I rather suggest using the whitelist command, which I will cover in a bit more detail later. With this on you have to allow players to be able to join and if they are not whitelisted, they can not join the server. Of course you can just skip the whitelist and just use /ban, but if people have alts they can always come back so be careful!
Commands you need to know
There are some commands that every Minecraft server owner needs to know. I will list the commands and their functions below.
/pardon <player name> - unbans a player
/ban <player name> - bans a player
/whitelist add <player name> - adds a player to the whitelist
/whitelist remove <player name> - Removes a player from the whitelist
/op <player name> - makes a player operator
/difficulty <peaceful, easy, normal, or hard> - changes the difficulty of the server
/deop <player name> - removes operator from a player
/gamerule mobgriefing <true or false> - stops mobs from breaking blocks ex creeper explosions do no effect on the environment
