The story of the film is based on a fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi created by Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Many film stars have worked in this film including Sushant Singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari and Swastika Mukherjee in all the main roles.

Bringing Bandopadhyay's instinctively created characters to life, laughs roll in here and there, Dibakar Banerjee builds a thriller in 15 to 20 minutes, piecing together pieces of Bakshi Babu to unravel the mystery . Signs are scattered among the locals.
Banerjee's Byomkesh has little in common with literary Byomkesh. The film credits say that the story and characters are based on Saradindu Bandopadhyay's series, but that Banerjee is humble. He has taken only names and trivial details from the short story. A mix of history and fiction, elegant violence and noise in detective Byomkesh Bakshi, it is uniquely Banerjee's creation.
There are some brilliant moments in the film, such as the climax showcased with mostly shadowplay, showing Banerjee at her most stylish and wicked. All the opium in the world would not have inspired Bandopadhyay to come up with such visuals.
Dibakar is talking about a time when Byomkesh was not a finished product. And Sushant Singh Rajput shows that he is a work in process. Just about everyone who would rather be a detective than teach math. And perhaps it's such a simple experience that Dibakar is the perfect choice to rejuvenate the home grown in dhoti.
